The Chronicle of Higher Education last week announced the results of a new survey of revenues generated by technology transfer. The Association of University Technology Managers studied records from 132 institutions for 1998, finding that royalties are up 29 percent overall from 1997.

Emory University ranked 20th, receiving $5,074,100 in licensing income from 15 licenses. That's more than double the income earned in 1997. Last year, Emory also received 26 patents and applied for 50 more. Five start-up companies in 1998 were launched from Emory.

The University of California System continued to lead in revenues, receiving $73,101,000 from its nine campuses. Columbia University came in second, generating $61,649,002. The four institutions closest to Emory in amount of revenue generated are: John Hopkins, California Institute of Technology, Cornell Research Foundation, and Rutgers University.
