Emory Faculty In the Spotlight:
Emory historian Michael Bellesiles analyzes recent incidents involving children and violence in "Exploding the Myth of an Armed America," an essay featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education's new review section (Sept. 29, 2000).
Bellesiles's new book, Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture," was also featured on the cover of the September 10 issue of The New York Times Book Review. Reviewer Garry Willis notes that "Bellesiles has dispersed the darkness that covered the gun's early history in America. He provides overwhelming evidence that our view of the gun is as deep a superstition as any that affected Native Americans in the 17th century."
Many of us will also want to read the "Notes from Academe" in the same Chronicle issue that contains Bellesiles essay because Emory English professor Ron Schuchard is mentioned there with regard to the Yeats summer school in Sligo.
