Information for Waitlisted Students

Thank you for your continued interest in Emory.

Commonly asked questions and answers

Please first review these commonly asked questions. Should you have additional questions about the wait list that are not covered on this page, please feel free to contact us.

1. How many students are usually taken off the wait list?

Predicting the return on our initial offers of admission is an inexact science. Over the past five years the number of students who have accepted positions on our wait list has averaged from six to seven hundred. The number of students who have been offered admission from the wait list has ranged from none to one hundred.

2. Is the wait list ranked?

Our wait list is not ranked. If positions in the first-year class become available, the Admission Committee will evaluate wait list candidates on academic and personal qualifications and specific areas of need to round out the first-year class (geographic mix, special talents, etc.)

3. What can I do to show my interest in being taken off the wait list?

To show your interest in being on our wait list, respond online as directed in your decision letter and provide us with a specific date after which you would no longer be interested in remaining on the wait list.

4. When is wait list activity concluded?

Wait list activity will be concluded by June 1. Historically, we have called students to offer admission from the wait list as early as late April and have continued through mid-May. Students not offered admission from the wait list will be notified by email or by letter that wait list activity has been concluded.

5. Is there financial aid available for wait list students?

Emory subscribes to an aid blind admission process, meaning your admission decision is not affected by your need for financial aid. All admitted students, including those students admitted from the wait list, who apply for aid by the appropriate deadline and who demonstrate financial need will receive the available grant, loan, and work-study funds for which they are eligible. 6. If I am offered a position in the freshman class, how much time will I have to respond?

A member of the admission staff will call you if you are going to be admitted from the wait list. You will have three days to respond to our offer of admission by submitting a nonrefundable $450 deposit. If you have not previously visited the campus and feel that you must do so prior to enrollment, you will have seven days to visit and finalize your plans.

Oxford College as an Option

As a wait listed student, you may have the application materials you submitted to Emory College reviewed by Oxford College of Emory University.

Emory was founded in Oxford, Georgia in 1836 and moved to Atlanta in 1919. Oxford College is a two-year undergraduate division of Emory University located on the school's historic original campus in Oxford, GA, 38 miles east of Atlanta.

For the students who choose to attend Oxford College, they complete their first two years of study there, and upon successfully completing the Oxford program, they may automatically continue to Emory's Atlanta campus for their last two years of study.

While at Oxford, students study a traditional liberal arts curriculum. The college provides an intensely personal living / learning community that emphasizes small classes, dedication to teaching, and leadership opportunities. Oxford is distinctive in many ways, but two of the more important distinctions are its size of 600 students and its quaint small town / suburban location. The size and location help to define Oxford and to encourage its close sense of community.

If you have not already applied to and received an admission decision directly from Oxford College, your Emory College application can now serve as your application to Oxford. In order to have your application reviewed by the Oxford College Admission Committee, please follow these simple steps:

1. Login to your OPUS account (www.opus.emory.edu).
2. Navigate to the Admission icon and click on “Apply to Oxford”.
3. Place a check on the box, click "submit,” and your information from Emory College will automatically be transferred to Oxford College via our system - no need to complete another admission application or pay an additional application fee!

You will receive an email notifying you that your information has been received by Oxford College. Once the Admission Committee has made a decision, it will be available via your OPUS account.

Being admitted to Oxford College, will not affect your chances of being admitted from the Emory College wait list.

The admission staff at Oxford College can answer questions or assist you in arranging a visit to their campus. Please call Oxford at 800-723-8328 or 770-784-8328 if you need more information.

Visits to campus

Please note that personal interviews are not available and a visit to the campus has no bearing on being admitted from the wait list. Most wait list students have already visited the campus during their college search process. If you have never seen the campus and wish to visit during the month of April, you may arrange a visit by contacting the Office of Admission at 800-727-6036. During your visit you may tour campus, and if space is available, we welcome you to attend a group information session. Please understand that space in our information sessions during the month of April is often limited due to the volume of admitted students who will be visiting.
