THE COMMON APPLICATION AND EMORY'S COMMON APPLICATION
SUPPLEMENT
To Common Application applicants:
We are pleased you are interested in applying to Emory University, and we welcome your application to one or both of our freshman admitting divisions: Emory College and Oxford College.
To begin the application process, we strongly encourage you first to complete and submit Emory University's Common Application supplement. The supplement contains important information regarding application options and deadlines. Because you may apply to one or both colleges and because each offers various application plans, you must check the appropriate box on the supplement to indicate your preferences.
Submitting the supplement now allows Emory and Oxford to customize the information we send to you. Once you have submitted the supplement, you are ready to begin the Common Application which should be completed and submitted as soon as possible but no later than the deadline of the earliest application plan you have chosen.
Fees and Important Details
Emory University exclusively uses the Common Application. Whether applying to Emory College, Oxford College or both, a student starts the application process by searching for "Emory University" at www.commonapp.org. The University's Common Application supplement then allows an applicant to select an admission plan for one or both of the colleges.
A student may apply online to both Emory College and Oxford College, with one application and one $50 application fee.
A student's application will not be complete and will not be reviewed until both the
Common Application and Common Application Supplement have been submitted.
The Common Application supplement will be the form of record regarding a student's application plan; if a student notes a different plan on the general Common Application, the plan selected on the supplement will determine how the file is considered.
If a student is applying to both Emory College and Oxford College and the deadline dates are different, the earlier deadline date will apply to both divisions.
Supporting documents, such as the high school transcript, SAT/ACT scores, etc., must be submitted to each school separately.
If a student originally applies to only Emory College or Oxford College and later decides to submit an application to the other school, the student will not be able to submit the second application online. Instead, he or she will need to submit a paper application to the other school. However, an additional application fee does not have to be submitted.
Students who apply to both Oxford College and Emory College will have their application reviewed independently and will receive an independent decision from each school.
A student may apply early decision to Emory College and early action to Oxford College, but note that an early decision application to Emory College is binding. By selecting early decision, students are indicating that the school is their first choice and that if admitted, they are willing at attend. If admitted to both schools in this situation, a student would be obliged to withdraw his or her early action application at Oxford College and to enroll at Emory College.
Emory will likely receive around 17,500 applications this year; there
are many questions my colleagues and I will ask repeatedly while reviewing
your file. Why should we choose to admit you? You have more than 3,000
accredited colleges and universities from which to choose; why have you
chosen to apply to Emory? We find answers to these questions from the
information you submit to us. We look for future biochemists who will
markedly alter cancer research, novelists who will produce groundbreaking
works, diplomats who will address global inequalities, and musicians who
will bridge gaps between the natural sciences and humanities; we want
1,270 pioneerspeople who will change Emory and the world. What is
more, we look for people excited about Emory and eager to become a part
of this dynamic community. We carefully note demonstrated interest during
the admission process and expect candidates to have done their homework
on us: have you met us at a college fair, ordered the Emory Video
Visit, attended an information session, or perhaps visited campus?
Most importantly, have you clearly and specifically articulated why Emory
is a good match for you?
We will never get to know you as well as we would likedespite the
grades, despite the tests, despite the essays, despite all of the paper
and electronic blips that the application will entail. Hopefully, though,
we will catch a genuine glimpse of you. Hopefully, your words, thoughts,
and interests will transform the two-dimensional paper into a textured,
three-dimensional portrait of yourself. Be honest, be yourself, and enjoy
this time to reflect.
Best wishes,
Jean Jordan
