U.S. IMMIGRATION

All international students come to the United States under regulations of the U.S. which are supervised by the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Every international student must have a passport. Most passports are valid for a limited time. Before the expiration date, a international student must have the passport renewed at his or her nearest Consulate or Embassy in the U.S.

In order to receive a visa to enter the U.S., most students will receive a Form 1-20 or IAP-66. Unless the student is from a country not subject to visa restrictions, this form must be taken by the student to a U.S. Consulate Office in order that a rubber-stamped entry visa may be entered on the student’s passport.

A international student, subject to visa requirements, may not enter the U.S. unless the visa entry has been made in the passport. A student should advise the University if his country will permit him to leave only on a “J” type visa.
Upon arrival at a port of entry to the U.S., the student presents the passport and form I-20 or IAP-66 and will receive and Arrival/Departure Record (Form I-94). Permission to stay in the U.S. will be for the duration of the student’s status as a bona fide non-immigrant student.

Forms I-20 and IAP-66 (request for visa) will not be issued by Emory University until the student has been accepted for a program of study and has submitted evidence of funds necessary to meet all expenses while enrolled.
