Need-Based Financial Aid

Your college education is likely one of the biggest investments that you and your family will ever make. It is a major commitment, one that—with the right financial plan—will pay off throughout your future. The primary responsibility for meeting the cost of an Emory education rests with the student and family to the extent they are able to pay. Emory University is willing to help you through your college years by offering an array of financial programs. All of the programs have one objective: to make an Emory education affordable for you.

Emory is a need-blind institution. This means a student’s ability to pay for the education is not considered when admission decisions are made.

The Emory University Office of Financial Aid offers three basic types of need-based financial aid: grants, work-study, and loans. For students with financial need, their award package typically includes a combination of all three; students may accept all or part of the award offered.

• Grants Gift assistance that does not have to be earned or repaid.

• Work Study An award for which a student must work. Money is earned on an hourly basis, and the student is paid twice each month.

• Loans Low-interest awards that must be repaid after the student ceases to be enrolled at least half-time at a post-secondary institution.
