Applying Early Decision

Emory offers two Early Decision (ED) options. ED I has a deadline of November 1; the deadline for ED II is January 1. Both are binding applications; both pools are reviewed in the same way. If we admit an ED applicant and if Emory is an affordable option for the student and his or her parents, we expect that the student will enroll in the coming fall term.

In advising your students, please remind them of the serious nature of an Early Decision application. If Emory University is not the student’s first and clear choice, please advise them not to apply Early Decision. In last year’s class, 35 percent of our incoming first-year class applied to Emory as an ED applicant.

If cost is a factor in the student’s college decision, the student should apply for financial aid. Need-based aid is applied for via the Office of Financial Aid. For Early Decision applicants, the PROFILE and the family’s complete and signed tax documents must be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid by the appropriate deadline, November 1 for EDI and January 1 for ED II.

It is essential that students meet the admission and financial aid deadlines. If cost is a factor, students absolutely should not pay the admission deposit until they have learned of their financial aid award. If deadlines are met, Emory will meet a students’ demonstrated financial need. If enrollment does not seem feasible for the student and his or her family after reviewing Emory’s financial aid offer, we will gladly release the applicant from the binding ED application.

Once the ED admission deposit is submitted, the student is telling Emory that he or she will enroll at Emory and immediately withdraw all other college admission applications. Before a student submits the admission deposit, we request a counselor’s signature on the accompanying deposit card. We hope this provides you the opportunity to counsel the student about his or her very serious commitment to Emory.
