Jim received his undergraduate training in physics at the University of Florida. Deciding not to go directly into his career of science, he took 4 years off to become a naval aviator. He has about 1000 hrs. and 150 carrier landings in an A4 attack jet. Returning to science, he obtained a Master's degree in Radiation Biophysics prior to entering the Ph.D. program in Physiology at the University of Virginia. Jim also received postdoctoral training at the University of Washington and was a research associate at SUNY, Stony Brook.

He is a neuroscientist working on how the brain processes visual formation in monkeys (very similar to humans) with his laboratory at Yerkes Research Center. His teaching responsibilities include Human Anatomy for the first year medical students, nervous system for the Allied Health students, and lectures to the graduate students in Neuroscience. His current interests are mostly in birds (birding) and bird photography . His book , "Common Birds of Atlanta" , will be available in most book stores in September, 1998. He is the Conservation Director for the Atlanta Audubon Society.  He is the President of a new group formed for rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife called A.W.A.R.E. (Atlanta Wild Animal Rescue Effort). Jim's wife is Kay and his children are two shelties - Kacha and Gator - (with a cat, B.C., kept for entertaining the children).
