James Herndon, M.A.

Director of Debate Programs and Debate Coach

A nationally ranked intercollegiate debater at Mercer, James Herndon was an assistant debate coach at the University of Alabama prior to his extraordinary tenure as one of the nation's top secondary school coaches at Chattahoochee in Atlanta, qualifying 18 teams to high school nationals over a three year period. He has coached at Emory University since 2009, coaching multiple top sixteen teams in collegiate debate.  James has had the honor of judging the championship round of the National Debate Tournament and the Cross Examination Debate Associations.  His topic paper on victimless crimes was selected as the debate topic for the 2014-15 policy debate season. A top faculty member for national debate institutes, James has served at Michigan, Samford, and the Atlanta Urban Debate Institute at Georgia State. He has received coaching awards from the Georgia Forensics Coaches Association and the Southern Region of intercollegiate debate.
