Each year students graduate from Emory University leaving their classrooms, dorm rooms, exams, and papers behind. But the one thing that all students retain is their shared experiences in college. The Barkley Forum provides unique college opportunities which all of its alumni, formally known as The Foundation, share. The alumni of the Barkley Forum provide guidance, support, experience, and opportunity for current and future students to share in the forensics experience. The support of The Foundation is greatly appreciated. The alumni of the Barkley Forum include attorneys, physicians, professors, teachers, government officials, university administrators and successful entrepreneurs.

The Barkley Forum has a long history of alumni support. They are the foundation upon which debaters of the present reap the rewards of the past as they become the foundation of the future. Prior Emory debaters remain a large part of the Barkley Forum today. It is frequently said around the debate office that you "never leave the BF." And so it is that past BF members return to help run programs, provide expert advice on new debate topics, coach and judge at tournaments, and serve as a resource for internships and entry level employment for recent Emory graduates. The children and siblings of previous Barkley Forum debaters who matriculated at Emory are a strong testament to the everlasting bonds formed between the current and past members of the Emory debate team. More than ten families have sent siblings or descendants of Barkley Forum members past to join the Barkley Forum of the present.

During Homecoming Weekend, the Barkley Forum, with the help of the Emory Development Office and the Glenn Pelham Foundation, hosted a brunch to update the current endowment drive. Multiple generations of Barkley Forum alumnae were present including such luminaries former US Senator George Lemeiux (R-Fl and '92), Civil Rights Attorney Larry Woods ('66), Emory Trustee Susan Cahoon ('68). During the weekend, Stephen Bailey ('01), former CEO of Frontier Strategies Group received the Distinguished Young Alumnus Award from the Emory Alumni Association. At the brunch, the co-chairs of the Endowment Drive, Cully Clark ('65) and Lillian Correa ('73), encouraged alumni to get involved and help ensure the continued strength of the Barkley Forum. Melissa Wade ('72) also announced that Foundation members Bailey and former debate partner Kamal Ghali ('01) would be debating fellow alumni Scott Segal ('86) and Frank Lowrey ('89) will perform in an exhibition debate as part of the endowment drive.

Alumni Involvement

Many alumni remain actively involved in the Barkley Forum, especially in our community outreach programs. If you would like to continue to support the activities of the Barkley Forum after graduation there are two ways of participating: one is to be a volunteer in our programs and the other is to provide financial contributions. If you would like to volunteer to work with our community outreach as a judge, teacher, or mentor, you can contact Kara Grant at kcgrant@learnlink.emory.edu.

The Barkley Forum is currently involved in a substantial endowment drive as one of the top priorities of the Emory Financial Campaign.
