The Barkley
Forum has a long and glorious history of success in competition.
But nothing matches the recent years for demonstrating that the
long-term goals of a program are important to future successes.
We have identified several highlights including national championships
won, NDT performances and CEDA performances. The students and the
alumni of the Barkley Forum have built a model for continued success.
Emory University National
Debate Championships
While the list
below identifies national titles won, it is only part of the story.
It does not tell the number of second place finishes and semifinal
finishes. It does not tell of the hundreds of invitational tournaments
the Barkley Forum has won. And while it may identify specific teams
that won, the list cannot describe the effort, support and commitment
so many other students provided which made these championships possible.

Emory at the National
Debate Tournament
The United States
Military Academy hosted the first National Debate Tournament immediately
after World War II ended. The first tournament featured 29 teams
invited at the suggestion of various debate coaches contacted by
the cadets at West Point. Now the tournament has over 70 teams who
qualify through an elaborate procedure so that only the most skilled
debaters even compete at the National Debate Tournament. Rich in
tradition, every round at the NDT is still judged by three-judge
panels, the preliminary rounds are still announced orally by the
tournament director, and it remains among the most prestigious tournament
events of the debate season. Emory University has faired well at
the NDT, the name appearing in numerous parts of the record book.
Since 1996, eight different debaters have represented Emory in the
final round of the tournament, a record-setting five out of six
years, capturing the title twice. While Emory is famous for having
lost more octafinal rounds than anyone in the history of the tournament
(20), students have also reached the quarterfinals six times, the
semifinals three times, and the finals five times. The appearance
of so many teams in the elimination rounds of the National Debate
Tournament is a demonstration of the highest effort and intellectual
achievement of Emory students. Below we list the students who reached
the quarterfinal round or later rounds at the NDT.

Cross Examination
Debate Association National Championship
The Cross Examination
Debate Association (CEDA) was formed in 1973. The organization did
not sponsor a national championship tournament until 1985. This
tournament, unlike the NDT, is an open national championship. At
times, over 400 teams have competed at the tournament, but lately
it has been a more manageable size. The Barkley Forum has attended
CEDA Nationals every year since the tournament began and has reached
the semifinals three times and won the tournament twice. While not
as old or as selective as the NDT, CEDA Nationals is the largest
policy debate tournament in the world, and Emory is well represented
at the tournament. In the fifteen-year history of the tournament,
more than fifty different Emory teams have competed in the elimination
rounds. The list below identifies the Emory teams that made it to
the quarterfinals or further at the tournament.
