First year students
receive unique opportunities when debating at Emory. Students are
encouraged to maintain academic commitments and explore the unique
opportunities of college life at Emory University. First year students
are limited to up to four tournaments in their first semester. They
are welcome to attend more tournaments in subsequent semesters as
long as they continue to make good grades. While establishing themselves
in college and exploring debate opportunities, first year students
receive important instruction in research, speaking, and debate
strategy.
All Barkley
Forum members must maintain a 3.0 average to participate in debate.
The Barkley Forum maintains one of the highest Grade Point Averages
of any on-campus organization. Many members are inducted into Phi
Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, and the Mortar Board Society. Many
Barkley Forum members have graduated with top honors from a large
number of departments including political science, philosophy, psychology,
history, and anthropology, among others. Emory debaters are expected
to make good grades in order to take advantage of travel.
The Barkley
Forum and Emory University pay for travel expenses and evidence
production. The excellent support students receive also generates
the expectation that students will support the Barkley Forum and
Emory University as it attempts to honor, serve, and reward others
in the community. Students who travel for the Barkley Forum are
expected to assist with the Barkley Forum for High Schools and to
assist with many of the Urban Debate League tournaments the Forum
sponsors during the academic school year.
The Barkley
Forum attends a large number of tournaments, allowing students to
adapt a personal travel schedule suited to their academic needs,
debate expectations, and other interests. Emory usually attends
