Three primary operating principles govern Institute instruction.

First, we educate a diverse student population. Exposure to new students and a new environment enhances intellectual growth and debate skills.

Second, we hire the most talented teachers. The Institute Faculty is experienced. The faculty develop their curriculum under close supervision of the director. The core faculty is composed of current high school teachers and college professors who have been successful debaters and coaches.

Third, we provide instruction for the fundamental skills of debate. Students of the institute learn skills that are fundamental in all endeavors: critical thinking, research, and presentation. The curriculum is designed by a director with advanced degrees in Educational Studies.

The Institute is designed to maximize instruction in debate fundamentals.

Excellent Student-faculty ratio. Generally, students work in lab settings with a lead instructor and two or three assistants for a six-to-one student teacher ratio.

Attention to skill development. The Institute builds in a great deal of instruction time to work on the fundamentals of debate and to maximize performance opportunities for the students.

Supervised research efforts. Access to an extensively prepared institute library and access to internet computer research is all done under the watchful eye of well-trained faculty and staff minimizing time wasted.

The institute offers multiple divisions of debate.

The Scholars Program in Policy Debate. The Scholars Programs is designed for the experienced high school student with advanced debate skills and experience. Designed by members of Emory’s nationally successful college coaching staff, the program provides scholars with advanced focused library instruction, targeted use of the Internet, understanding and skills for contemporary debate positions, and education and appreciation for traditional skills and arguments.

Policy Debate. ENDI students are assigned to appropriate lab and theory groups based on experience and current knowledge of debate concepts. Presentation skills receive attention in many practice speeches and practice rounds. We provide access to materials from the Emory University library system including the Woodruff Library, the Gambrell Law Library, the Woodruff Health Sciences Library and a complete government document depository. We also provide access to the Internet in supervised computer labs.

Junior High Program in Policy Debate. Our unique Junior High curriculum has been developed over five years of testing and refinement. It features instruction in public speaking, cross-examination, reesearch, and argumentation. Instruction is designed not only to prepare students for competition but also to equip them with advanced academic skills that will serve them well in high school and college. We combine proven teaching methods with progressive activities designed to make the best use of the students’ boundless energy.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Students are assigned to appropriate lab and theory groups based on experience and current knowledge of debate concepts. Public speaking skills are emphasized through practice speeches, video-taping, and practice rounds. Extemporaneous speaking is used as a teaching tool to develop the skills of organization, concentration, exposition, and public speaking. A sample topic allows students to learn how to apply in practice what is taught in theory. Students will learn fundamentals of debate including reasoning, presentation, and research.

Coach’s Institute. The Institute for coaches offers a full curriculum for directing debate and has been offered as a graduate level academic course at Emory University and Georgia State University (for additional tuition fees). The Institute has also been offered for Staff Development Unit credits through the State of Georgia. A flexible curriculum allows teachers to focus on the following areas: program development, public relations, organizing a debate squad, teaching debate skills, argument and debate theory, and focused argument and topic development and research.
