The Emory 4-Week Sophomore Institute

4-week ENDI: June 23-July 21, 2012

Instructors: Edward Lee-Director of Debate, Emory University; Maggie Berthiaume-Debate Coach, Woodard Academy; and Megan Cambre, Emory Sophomore and NDT elimination round participant in 2012

The Emory 4-week Sophomore Institute is a debate workshop designed for students who have just finished their first year of high school policy debate. The institute is designed for those students who desire a challenging summer workshop experience and who wish to engage in competition at an advanced level to prepare them for success for the remainder of their high school debate career.

This is our third year offering this institute with this staff.

The four-week institute will be accepting 24 students, insuring that the camp will guarantee a maximum of an 8 to 1 ratio of faculty to students.

Why should I go to four weeks of camp instead of 2?
The four-week institute allows twice as much time and facilitates an intense research focused approach to the topic which includes instruction in research technique, maximized library resource use, and argument evolution. We are committed to providing the best experience for sophomore debaters in the country.

Is my child eligible for this camp?
We want to put together a camp that is focused exclusively on students who have just learned what debate is [on the novice level] and want to advance to a significantly higher level Varsity debater. If your son or daughter is a senior or a rising 9th grader that has just completed their first year of debate, then he or she is eligible for the institute. We anticipate enrolling students on the same level of experience regardless of age.

Lab Groups

The four-week institute will feature a group of 24 equally experienced students and will be taught by Lee and Turner, along with a student member of the Emory Debate Team. All faculty members will be in attendance for the entirety of the institute and every student will have the opportunity to interact with all faculty.

The Lab Group serves as a central instructional unit throughout the workshop. Students will work with Lee and Turner throughout the 4-week experience. This personal instruction will allow instructors to learn the work habits, strengths, and weaknesses of each of the participating students.
