The Emory 4 week Sophomore Institute

4-week ENDI: June 28-July 25, 2009

The Emory 4 week Sophomore Institute is a debate workshop designed for students who have just finished their first year of high school policy debate. The institute is designed for those students who desire a challenging summer workshop experience and who wish to engage in competition at an advanced level to prepare them for success for the remainder of their high school debate career.

This is a new addition to the Emory Debate summer camp

The four week institute will be accepting precisely 48 students for the four week institute insuring that the camp will guarantee a maximum of an 8 to 1 ratio of faculty to students.

Why should I go to four weeks of camp instead of 2?
The four week institute is committed to a smaller faculty to student ratio, will provide an intense research focused approach to the topic. We are committed to providing the best experience for sophomore debaters in the country. Obviously the two week camp is committed to excellence as well. However, the amount of instruction, research guidance, and debate skills that can be learned in four weeks will, at a minimum, be twice the quality.

Is my child eligible for this camp?
We want to put together a camp that is focused exclusively on kids who have just learned what debate is [on the novice level] and want to make the jump to being a high level competitive Varsity debater. If your son or daughter is a senior or a rising 9th grader that has just completed their first year of debate then they are eligible for the institute. We anticipate a number of students that are of varying ages. We want kids who are on the same level of experience regardless of age.

Lab Groups

The four week institute will be divided into groups of 16 students each. Each groups will be taught by a collection of full-time institute faculty members. All faculty members will be in attendance for the entirety of the institute. Every student will have the opportunity to interact with all members of the Emory Debate Camp staff on a personal level throughout the camp.

The Lab Group serves as a central instructional unit throughout the workshop. Students will work with one central lab leader that is a full-time coach at Emory University throughout the institute. This personal instruction will allow instructors to learn the work habits, strengths, and weaknesses of each of their debaters.

In addition to the lab setting, students will also have the opportunity to attend lectures given by faculty and other members of the Emory Debate Coaching Staff.
