The Emory 6-Week Debate Institute

The Emory 6-Week Debate Institute is a debate workshop designed for those students who desire a challenging summer workshop experience and who wish to engage in competition at the highest level to prepare them for success for the remainder of their high school debate career and hopefully into college.

The six-week institute will be accepting 24 students, insuring that the camp will guarantee a maximum of an 8 to 1 ratio of faculty to students.

Why should I go to six weeks of camp?
The six-week institute is committed to a smaller faculty to student ratio that will provide an intense research focused approach to the topic. We are committed to providing the best experience for serious debaters in the country. Obviously a shorter camp is committed to excellence, as well. However, the amount of instruction, research guidance, and debate skills that can be learned in six weeks will, at a minimum, be twice the quality.

If you are interested in becoming a successful high school debater, this camp will give you exposure to some of the brightest debate minds in the country.

James Herndon has been coaching debate and summer camps since 1999.  He has qualified over twenty teams to the TOC, he has coached the maximum number of teams to the elimination rounds of the NDT each year he has coached college debate, and he is committed to sound education practice as a coach and teacher.

Maggie Berthiaume has established herself as one of the hardest working and most successful debate coaches in the country.  She has qualified numerous teams to the TOC every year she has coached high school debate.  She has taught a high-quality lab at the Dartmouth Debate Institute for five years and is committed to excellence.

A nationally competitive member of the national champion Emory Debate team will complete the teaching staff of the 6-week group.

The 6-week lab offers a rare opportunity to work in a small setting with an incredibly strong set of strategic debate minds.

Is my child eligible for this camp?
If your debater is ready to take the next step toward the highest level of national competition, he or she is ready for this experience. If your son or daughter is a rising junior or senior ready to significantly advance, this is the ideal lab.

Lab Groups

The six-week institute will be comprised of a group of 24 equally experienced students. All faculty members will be in attendance for the entirety of the institute. Every student will have the opportunity to interact with all members of the Emory Debate Institute staff on a personal level throughout the camp.

The Lab Group serves as a central instructional unit throughout the workshop. Students will work with Herndon, Berthiaume, and other qualified staff throughout the 6-week experience. This personal instruction will allow instructors to learn the work habits, strengths, and weaknesses of each of the participating students.

In addition to the lab setting, students will also have the opportunity to attend lectures given by faculty and other members of the Emory Debate Coaching Staff.

Fees

The Emory 6-Week Debate Institute
6-week ENDI: June 10-July 21, 2012

Residential Fees for 2012:  $4200 including a $150 non-refundable deposit

Commuter fees for 2012:   $3500 including a $150 non-refundable deposit

These fees cover the full cost of tuition, a room in the Residence Hall, Dining for 3 meals a day, lab copying fees, social events, and all activities that take place during the camp.

Returning students will receive a $250.00 discount off their 2012 fees for the six-week institute (upon request)!

Additional spending money should only be necessary if a student plans on ordering food in addition to the meals provided, or for any souvenirs or other items they want to purchase.
