Why do we need a new version of IP? Let's first look at a few famous last words:
"I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." - Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943
"640K out to be enough for anybody." -Bill Gates, 1981
"32 bits should be enough address space for the Internet" - Unknown
Anyone familiar with computers and the Internet revolution knows the accuracy of the first two quotes. What most people may not know is that as mobile computing expands, and other countries begin expanding the use of the Internet, the third quote may be soon sound as foolish as the first two.
This document will provide an overview of the Internet Protocol version 6, also referred to as Internet Protocol next generation or as IPng and now usually designated as IPv6. As you will see, IPv6 solves the addressing issues found in IPv4.
The intended audience is the manager familiar with information technology in general, but not necessarily a specialist in data communications. This overview covers the most important characteristics of IP in general and specifically of IPv6 and addresses the issues considered important to managers of computer and data communications systems and services
