Information Visualization Background
Information visualization, or visual data mining, allows members of an organization to obtain information in a visual manner. But information visualization goes beyond obtaining information, it provides a better way to find information, interact with information, and ultimately understand information. Since the explosion of the World Wide Web in the 1990s, individuals have had an ever-increasing number of information points to review when searching for information. The Web now contains over 1.6 billion web pages, the number of web servers is doubling every 50 days, and the number of "mega sites", or those receiving the highest number of hits, is estimated to be 25,000. In addition, individuals must keep up with an increasing amount of corporate knowledge in their daily work; corporations are now moving to have senior level Knowledge Management Officers in charge of managing and securing corporate data and providing access to valuable information enterprise-wide.
So concerned are individuals about managing information that several societies have been formed, such as the Society for Information Management and the Information Resources Management Association. In addition, journals such as the Journal of Global Information Management and Information Resources Management Journal have been established. In addition, corporations have demanded expert assistance with managing corporate information, thus creating a new market for information management consultants.
This site will further explain Information Visualization, and will highlight a provider of such technology, WebMap Technologies, Inc.
