The purpose of this project is to examine the new data transmission technology called Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL).  ADSL is a modem technology that allows high-speed voice, data and video transmissions simultaneously over ordinary phone lines.  With nearly 750 million phone lines worldwide, service providers can use ADSL technology.

As the most widely known and accepted, ADSL technology is one variant of Digital Subscriber Line technology.  Others include High Bit Rate DSL (HDSL), IDSN DSL  (IDSL) and Very High Bit Rate DSL  (VDSL).  References will be made to these other technologies as part of this document.  However, our main focus for this project and and related research is ADSL.
