One recent application of cable telephony is an ongoing trial of the technology by AT&T in Fremont, CA.  Through hybrid fiber/coaxial cable (HFC), AT&T is delivering the convergence of data and voice across an existing Cable TV network infrastructure.

Circuit-switched telephony via cable offered in Fremont allows a customer to use from one to four phone lines.  Digital and analog TV signals provide the clarity of digital TV along with CD quality audio.  High speed internet access through a cable modem delivers the internet 100 times faster than service across a 56K modem.

The trial service to 450 customers was initiated early in 1999 and has been deemed successful by the company.  However, while the trial has proven that the technology works, the company now faces challenges to scale the technology, infrastructure, support and billing systems to roll out to the rest of its installed base.  Additional trials are planned for Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Hartford, Pittsburgh, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Seattle to commence by the end of 2000.
