Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite Communications
The Impact
Many of the emerging countries have little or no phone service. The technology will truly make communications from anywhere on earth possible. Portable phone booths (like todays landlines) can be placed throughout the world for payphones. The oceans will no longer be a communications void and the cost of laying phone cable over unforgiving terrain can be eliminated. It is predicted that by the year 2005 wireless phone conversations will surpass landline traffic. Several companies such as Globalstar and Iridium are racing to be the first to offer these services and many others are prepared to follow suit.
