Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite Communications

The Limitations

The LEO’s require that a tremendous number of satellites be launched into space. The cost and the risks are enormous. Globalstar recently lost $50 million worth of satellites with the explosion of a Russian Senit-2 rocket. The total projected cost of Globalstar’s system is $3.26 billion. The cost of a handset will be $3,000 and the customer will be charged up to $7.00 per minute to use the phone. These costs will keep it out of the general public for years to come. Mainstreaming will also be challenging since system failures will be difficult to diagnose and repair.
