Recent Appliactions of RFID:

Recent applications of RFID technology have shifted from tracking and identifying goods to systems
integration initiatives. In the past decade, the growing use of RFID has resulted in its implementation to
better the tracking of goods throughout the supply chain, access control for security, livestock
management, waste management tracking and identification, inventory control, and fleet management
within large transportation players. As the use of RFID grows on its quest to become a standard, firms
such as Motorola have begun thinking up of new ways to leverage the capabilities of the technology.
They have done so by making active RFID tags interface with existing computer systems (as standards
develop even further) to integrate the information provided by RFID throughout all relevant company
systems.
Likewise, UPS has recently begun an initiative to better track packages and fleets. As a result, RFID
becomes a key technology. By using RFID, UPS can monitor its goods in seconds, then process that
information throughout its relevant computer systems including internal operations, fleet management,
accounting, customer support, customer service, and its web site. By integrating all systems and
leveraging the quick and efficient use of RFID data, UPS can improve its service while lowering or
maintaining its cost structure. A similar approach can be taken in many industries.
