Director's Job Description

Michael D. Shutt is the Assistant Dean for Campus Life and Director of the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Life at Emory University. He began his work at Emory in June 2008. Originally from Angola, Indiana, he received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Public Administration from Michigan State University and his Doctor of Philosophy in Student Affairs Administration from the University of Georgia.

As the Director of the Office of LGBT Life, Michael creates and enhances educational, social, and support programs and services for students regarding issues of sexual and gender identities. He directs the strategic planning efforts; prioritizes programs and services; manages all budgets; coordinates fundraising and grant activities; creates and implements program and service assessments; supervises student and professional staff; and advises individual students and student groups.

In addition to his work in the Office of LGBT Life, Michael serves on several committees on campus including the Transforming Community Project Steering Committee; the President’s Commission on Sexuality, Gender Diversity, and Queer Equality; Emory Facilitator Network; Diversity Officer’s Council; Emory Chapter of the National Coalition Building Institute; and the Campus Life Assessment Committee. Michael is also an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Counseling and Human Development at the University of Georgia’s College of Education and serves on the Executive Board of the National Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals.

Michael and his Husband will soon be moving to Atlanta from Athens with their two dogs, a cat, and a host of unnamed fish!

Assistant Director Job Description

Danielle M. Steele is the Program Coordinator of the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Life at Emory University.  Previous to her start at Emory University in June 2010, Danielle received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Tennessee in her hometown of Knoxville.  For her graduate work, Danielle attended the University of Maine in Orono where she received her Master of Education in Student Development in Higher Education.

As Program Coordinator, Danielle works with the Director of LGBT Life to maintain and enhance educational, social, support, referral, and resource programs and services for students regarding issues of sexual and gender identities.  She plans, coordinates, and evaluates special events; organizes and supports programs including the Pride Awards and LGBT History Month; advises student groups; provides support and leadership to the Emory Safe Space Program and other training programs; and hires and supervises student staff.

Danielle is thrilled to join the Emory University community and work with the many talented students who frequent the Office of LGBT Life.  In her spare time, Danielle enjoys traveling, visiting amusement parks, appreciating the arts, and sharing good food with great people.

Josh Bergeleen is a member of Emory College’s class of 2014. Josh is pursuing a dual major of Business and Political Science. He loves being involved with the community in various ways and is an active member in Best Buddies, an organization which partners with young adults in the Atlanta area who have special needs. The rest of his free time is consumed with watching movies, spending time with friends, and reading.

Michael is a member of Emory College's class of 2012. With a major in Film and Media Studies, Michael is hoping to attend either film school or a graduate program in film studies. An active member in Emory's LGBT community, Michael is hoping to incorporate his passion for film to better educate the community at large. Most of his spare time is spent watching and critiquing films, cooking and baking to support his vegan lifestyle, spending time with good friends and blogging about various issues.
