Emory Golf Finishes First At Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate

March 8, 2017

The No. 10-ranked Emory University golf team closed out its opening action of the spring season on a successful note Tuesday, posting a first-place finish at the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate.  The 36-hole tourney was played at the 6,976-yard, par-72 Mountain View Golf Course in Pine Mountain, Ga. The Eagles compiled a second-round score of 299 en route to topping the 18-team field with a two-day of 596, one stroke ahead of No. 11-ranked LaGrange College (299-298). No. 7 Oglethorpe held down third place with a 600 (303—297) while Sewanee (300-301) and first-round leader and No. 1 Huntingdon College (296-305) deadlocked for fourth at 601.

Sophomore Stefano Butti came through with the Eagles' best score of the day with a one-over par 73, giving him a tourney mark of 151, good for a 21st-place tie out of 102 players.  Freshman Matt Organisak fired his second straight 74 to finish as Emory's overall top finisher at 148, with that score tying for 10th on the leaderboard.  Sophomore Noah Apter also recorded a 74, enabling him to tie for 14th place at 149.  Junior Keenan Hickton rounded out Emory's scorers on Tuesday with a 78 that gave him a final score of 156, tying for 48th place.  Sophomore Connor Yakubov posted a second-round mark of 80 and ended up tied for 16th in the field at 150.

Emory's championship performance represented the program's first non-University Athletic Association tournament title since the 2011 Emory Spring Invitational.

Emory now turns its attention to the UAA Championships, Mar. 11-12, at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast Florida.  The Eagles look to defend their crown in the match-play format.
