Internal Complaint Process:

EOP is Emory's designated investigator of internal discrimination or harassment complaints and determines if violations of Emory's official Equal Opportunity and Discriminatory Harassment policy have occurred.

Complaint Procedures:

If an Emory community memnber believes s/he has been the victim of discrimination or discriminatory harassment, s/he has the right to directly file an external complaint, as detailed below, but should consider first following Emory's official policy for conflict resolution:

  • Communicate directly with the alleged offender
  • Contact a community facilitator
  • File an internal complaint
  • File an external complaint

Communicate directly with the alleged offender:

Try to resolve the issue directly with the offender; if this is not feasible, or does not resolve the issue then....

Contact a community facilitator:

Contact the community facilitators and request a facilitator from the pool. The facilitator will make an informal investigation and try to mediate a resolution. If the facilitator believes the good faith efforts are ineffective, the facilitator may end the process and refer the matter to EOP. Also, if the complainant is dissatisfied with the mediation results, or does not wish to use the facilitation process, s/he should then....

File an internal complaint:

The complainant contacts EOP and initiates the formal complaint process. If the complainant is not satisfied with EOP's investigation and conclusion, s/he should then....

File an external complaint:

The complainant may at any time in the process, but before 180 days have passed after the incident, go directly to an outide agency, such as the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) or the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and have them investigate the incident.
