Leaders In the Labyrinth

Laney’s Leadership

By Paige P. Parvin

President Emeritus James T. Laney 94H is prominently featured in a new book, Leaders in the Labyrinth: College Presidents and the Battleground of Creeds and Convictions (American Council on Education, 2007), a study of university presidents, how they shape their institutions, and their influence in the broader world. Author Stephen Nelson takes particular interest in Laney’s shepherding of the landmark Woodruff gift, his role as a Methodist minister, his approach to Emory as a Methodist institution, and his ambition for Emory to become an internationally renowned university.
