All Good Things

TIBETAN MONKS from the Drepung Loseling Monastery created the intricate, brilliantly colored sand mandala on our cover in honor of the visit in May of the XIV Dalai Lama. The painstaking, six-week process of constructing the mandala from millions of grains of sand is said to have a purifying and healing effect. After remaining on view at the Michael C. Carlos Museum for two months, the mandala was destroyed, as is traditional, as a metaphor for the impermanence of life.
