News in Arabic: Novel resources broaden understanding

A substantial cache of Arabic-language print and electronic media resources are the heart of a new Arabic Media Center, recently established in the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies in conjunction with the Journalism Program. The database of media will be used for scholarly research and journalistic training.

Department chair Gordon Newby will act as the center’s director in partnership with Media Tenor, a media research institute based in Germany, which donated the core material. “With these materials added to our outstanding program in Arabic language and Middle Eastern studies,” Newby says, “Emory is becoming a leading destination for understanding the Middle East.”

In addition, a website that has become a leading scholarly resource on Holocaust denial will soon be translated into Farsi, the major language of Iran, and Arabic, making the site accessible to those in areas such as the Middle East where Holocaust denial is widespread. The University is building a $2 million endowment to support the Holocaust Denial on Trial website, a project launched by Dorot Professor of Jewish Studies Deborah Lipstadt. The site will offer subject-specific resource guides and lesson plans for educators.—P.P.P.
