Amy Carter soaring into Eagles season

Heading into the winter break, Emory's women's basketball team has a 7-1 record (2-0 in the University Athletic Association) thanks in part to junior point guard Amy Carter (right) of Madison, Ala. Carter leads the team with 13.8 points and 3.8 assists per game. Carter is one of three key returning players from last season's squad, which advanced to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Division III national championship. The others are senior Katie Schutz of Walnut Creek, Calif., averaging 13.1 points per game; and sophomore Alicia Moore of Palm Bay, Fla., averaging 13.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.

Carter, a Bowden Scholar, and Moore, a Woodruff Scholar, both missed most of the basketball pre-season practices while competing this fall in other Emory varsity sports. Carter was a midfielder on the women's soccer team that made the NCAA national tournament, and Moore set several school records as a middle blocker on the volleyball team.

Head Coach Myra Sims, in her eighth season at Emory, has 99 career victories and will be looking for No. 100 when the Eagles resume play on Jan. 4 at home against the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 8 p.m.

This is the fourth consecutive season that the Eagles have won at least six of their first eight games. A balanced attack has been key to their early-season success. Four players are averaging in double-figure scoring, while three other players have chipped in with 10 or more points in a game. Emory is 5-0 when four players score 10 or more points in a contest.
