STUDIES IN PROGRESS

DIGESTIVE DISEASES
Several research studies are being conducted in the Department of Digestive Diseases. Volunteers who have the following symptoms or diseases will be screened: heartburn, acidreflux, peptic ulcer disease, esophageal reflux disease, history of peptic ulcers, history of esophageal reflux, chest pain of non-cardiac origin, chronic hepatitis B/chronic hepatitis C or primary biliary cirrhosis. For information, call 727-3030.

MEMORY PROBLEMS STUDIES
Persons with memory problems are needed for studies at the School of Medicine. The research will assess the effectiveness of medications in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Qualified participants need to meet criteria for probable Alzheimer's disease. Symptoms include disorientation, loss of judgment and problem-solving abilities, decreased functioning in home and hobbies, community affairs and personal care. Participants should otherwise be in good health. Study medications and examinations by Emory physicians based at Wesley Woods Health Center are provided free of charge. Call 728-6311.

SORE THROAT PAIN STUDY
Volunteers are needed for a study of the pain-relieving effects of red pepper on moderate to severe sore throat pain. Persons with sore throats are needed for the study and will be paid for their time. Researchers will measure the pain intensity of the sore throat before and after volunteers eat red pepper lollipops. For information, contact the Department of Anesthesiology at 727-8337.

OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER STUDY
If you are bothered by thoughts that run over and over in your mind or you are unable to resist doing some activity over and over, you may qualify for a study that researchers are beginning on an investigational medication that may be useful in treating people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Participants will receive a free physical examination, including laboratory tests and electrocardiograms, as well as medicines. To be eligible, men and women must be between the ages of 18 and 65, reasonably healthy and not on certain medications. All involvement is confidential. For more information, call 727-8968.

ULCER STUDY
If you are 16 years of age or older and have been experiencing nausea, cramping or aching in your stomach that is either made worse or relieved by eating, you may have an ulcer. If you have any of these symptoms and if you have been diagnosed now or in the past with an ulcer, you may qualify to participate in a medical research study. If you qualify, you will receive a medical consultation, diagnostic testing, a physical exam and study medication. For information, call 727-3030.

POSTMENOPAUSAL OSTEOPOROSIS STUDY
An investigational medication for osteoporosis is being studied at The Emory Clinic and women are needed to participate in the research project. Volunteers must have undergone menopause at least two years ago, be age 80 or younger, presently not be taking any female hormones (estrogens), and be able to come to the clinic for follow-up visits every three to six months during this four-year study. Qualified participants will receive free physical examination, bone density measurements of spine and hip, spine x-rays, electrocardiograms, mammograms, study medications, laboratory tests. For more information, call 727-2663.

KIDNEY DISEASE STUDY
African-Americans in the very early stages of kidney disease are being recruited to participate in the African-American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension (AASK), the largest study of its kind ever undertaken in the United States. Qualified participants should have hypertension (high blood pressure), defined as blood pressure of 140 or more systolic and 95 or more diastolic (140/95). Volunteers need not have been diagnosed with kidney disease; those who have been diagnosed should not yet be on dialysis or high blood pressure medications. Volunteers also should be between 18 and 70 years of age. Researchers at the Emory School of Medicine and at the Morehouse School of Medicine are among those participating in the $52-million, seven-year trial. For information, call 473-8500.

SEIZURE DISORDER SUPPORT GROUP
A new Seizure Disorder Support Group will begin meeting the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. for persons with seizure disorders (including epilepsy), their families and friends. The support group is jointly sponsored by the local Epilepsy Foundation of America affiliate and the new Emory Epilepsy Center. It will be facilitated by nurse coordinator Sandra Clements.
