Emory senior abducted, murdered in Virginia

The body of Jennifer Evans, an Emory College senior from Tucker, was found on June 27 in Newport News City Park in Newport News, Va. Evans was reported missing on June 19, and was last seen the night before in a Virginia Beach nightclub.

A biology major with plans to attend medical school after graduation, Evans was visiting friends in Virginia Beach for a week with plans to return to Atlanta and a summer job at the Tucker Recreation Center. Evans was a 1994 graduate of Oxford College.

The Virgnia Beach Police Department, with the assistance of the FBI, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the U.S. Navy Seal Team, arrested Signalman 3rd Class Billie Joe Brown Jr. of Dayton, Ohio, and charged him with Evans' murder, abduction and attempted rape.

A joint memorial service for Emory and Oxford, sponsored by the Chaplain's Office, will be held on campus after the beginning of fall semester.

The Counseling Center (727-7450) and the Employee Assistance Program (727-4328) are offering their services to members of the Emory community who have been affected by Evans' death.

Human Resources now on the Web

Employees looking for information about benefit programs or job openings can now find that information on the World Wide Web. The Human Resources Information Page soon will include information on the Employee Assistance and Wellness programs, employee development, Emory procedures and Human Resources publications.

A team of Human Resources technical users has been coordinating the project and is soliciting useful suggestions from individuals accessing the pages. Comments about the project can be sent to Julianne McCarty at jmccart@ emory.edu.

The Human Resources Information page can be found at http://www.emory.edu/HR/ or through the "Life at Emory" section of the Emory Home Page.

Emory centralizes managed care operations

The Emory University System of Health Care (EUSHC) has established a Department of Managed Care, which will enable insurance carriers and managed care companies to negotiate single-signature contracts with The Emory Clinic, Emory Hospital and Crawford Long Hospital. This streamlined process will be expanded in the future to include other entities.

Michael Bernardino, associate director of The Emory Clinic, has been named director of the new EUSHC Department of Managed Care. Bernardino has had primary responsibility for managed care contracting at The Emory Clinic for the past several years. Patrick Hammond is the administrator, with responsibility for day-to-day operations.

Bernardino said that managed activities have been growing rapidly at Emory and "that the centralization and streamlining of managed care activities into one office will enable Emory to be more responsive to payers, facilitate implementation of contracts, improve customer service, continue to provide the highest quality clinical care and build on the foundation laid over the past two years which gives Emory access to over two million covered lives in Georgia."

The Department of Managed Care offices are located at 101 W. Ponce de Leon Ave., Suite 300, Decatur.
