Culture Camp spans the civilizations

Each day of Culture Camp presents participants with a different culture to learn from and play in. The camp, for children ages 8-12, runs June 12-July 24 at the Carlos Museum. Participants play games and sports from ancient civilizations such as Senet, an ancient board game, during their day "in" Egypt. They recreate a Maya ball game, re-enact the Olympic games, create art projects, hear stories, play gallery games, and explore the many other facets of ancient American and African cultures.

After looking at headdresses and masks in the museum's collection, students create African headdresses and masks using a variety of materials and their own unique creativity during their Culture Camp day "in" Africa. Pictured at right is Ujine Israel.

The Barefoot Ballet, an Atlanta professional dance group, taught students a traditional African dance. After practicing together (left), the students donned their headdresses and masks and performed on the quadrangle with the dance group. Students played authentic African instruments to accompany their dance.
