Wade cited as top college debate coach
Melissa Wade, director of the Barkley Forum, has received the Cross
Examination
Debate Association (CEDA) Don Brownlee Award for outstanding achievement
in
scholarship, education and service. The award was presented to Wade at
the CEDA
Nationals Debate Championship at San Diego State University last
month.
The CEDA award recognizes Wade's role in the success of the Barkley
Forum
debate team, the scholarship of Barkley Forum students, and the community
service provided through Barkley Forum programs.
The Barkley Forum annually hosts one of the largest high school speech
and
debate tournaments, as well as two instructional institutes for high
school
students.
Four athletes named All-Americans
Several Emory student-athletes attained milestones at the spring NCAA
Division
III national championships. Earning All-America honors were sophomore
Troy
Thompson of Memphis, Tenn., men's track and field; junior Amy Smith of
Altamonte Springs, Fla., women's tennis; and seniors Travis Saacke of
Henderson, Ky., and Todd Getz of Cincinnati, men's tennis.
Thompson won the triple jump to become the school's first national
champion in
that sport. Smith advanced to the championship match of the NCAA singles
tournament, the highest finish ever by an Eagle in that sport. Saacke
reached
the semi-finals of the singles championship and reached the quarterfinals
of
the doubles championship along with his partner, Getz. The latter two
helped
Emory place fourth in the team championship, the school's highest finish
ever
in men's tennis.
Hatcher named to Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars
Charles R. Hatcher Jr., director of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center
and
vice president for Health Affairs, has been selected as a 1995 Johns
Hopkins
University Society of Scholars inductee.
Hatcher and 14 other scientists and clinicians were honored during the
society's 26th induction ceremony and at the Johns Hopkins commencement
ceremony last month.
A 1950 graduate of the University Georgia and 1954 graduate of the
Medical
College of Georgia, Hatcher established and developed the School of
Medicine's
nationally renowned open heart surgery program.
Three providers of temporary personnel named
After extensive review of alternative temporary staffing services, Emory
has
contracted with Olsten, Norrell and Randstad service companies to provide
temporary employees on an "as needed" basis for the University, as well
as
Emory Hospital and Crawford Long Hospital. Requests for temporary
employees
should be directed to the Employment Department at 727-7031, who will
connect
the department with the appropriate service as well as monitor and
coordinate
the services. No other temporary services should be contacted. Comments

Ballard named AHSR 1995 Young Investigator
David Ballard, director of the Center for Clinical Evaluation Sciences
and
professor of medicine in the medical school and professor of epidemiology
in
the School of Public Health, has been named one of two 1995 Young
Investi-gators by the Association for Health Services Re-search (AHSR).
The
award recognizes the contributions of scholars less than 40 years of age
whose
work demonstrates remarkable impact on the field of health services
research.
President and founder of the Kerr L. White Institute for Health Services
Research, Ballard has created a consortium of peer review organizations
and
academic medical centers to apply state-of-the-art health services
research
methods to assess and improve the quality of care for Medicare
beneficiaries.
AHSR is the national membership organization formed to strengthen the
relationship between the users and producers of health services research.
Caffe Antico reopens to Emory community
Caffe Antico in the Carlos Museum reopened earlier this month under new
management. Located on the museum's third floor, Caffe Antico serves a
variety of European favorites, including continental breakfasts, gourmet
