Jowers, Teal given new roles

Ronnie L. Jowers and Gary L. Teal have been given new titles to better reflect their growing responsibilities at the University and the Emory University System of Health Care (EUSHC). The announcement was made earlier this month by Charles R. Hatcher Jr., vice president for Health Affairs, director of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center and chief executive officer of EUHSC.

Jowers has served as assistant vice president for Health Affairs since 1991; he now is associate vice president for Health Affairs and executive administrator of EUHSC. Teal, former director of Health Sciences Projects since 1993, has been promoted to assistant vice president for Health Affairs as well as director of Financial Operations for EUHSC.

"These newly created positions better reflect the many roles for which Mr. Jowers and Mr. Teal have taken responsibility in a fast-growing and complex institution," said Hatcher. He pointed out that in Jowers' role as chief financial officer of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, he is responsible for a budget of more than $800 million and some 10,000 employees, the equivalent of many Georgia towns. But over the past year Jowers has handled numerous other administrative responsibilities, including overseeing the searches for the new director of the Yerkes Primate Research Center and the deans of the schools of nursing and public health, financing for several health sciences buildings, and management oversight for the statewide INPHO project and other large programs. In his new role as executive administrator of EUSHC, Jowers also has oversight for all personnel and financial decisions of the organization, which includes Emory Hospital, Crawford Long Hospital and The Emory Clinic.

As assistant vice president for Health Affairs, Teal will oversee the finance, accounting, personnel and construction aspects of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, including the medical, nursing and public health schools, the Yerkes Primate Research Center, Emory Hospital and Crawford Long Hospital, and also The Emory Clinic. As director of Financial Operations for EUSHC, Teal will oversee the budget, as well as develop reports, policies and procedures for operations.
