Mandy Jackson awarded NCAA scholarship for graduate study

Basketball player Mandy Jackson of Madison, Wis., has been awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. Jackson is one of only five NCAA Division III players in the nation to receive the prestigious $5,000 scholarship to attend graduate school.

Jackson, who graduated this spring with a double major in music and chemistry, hopes to become a physician and work at an inner-city clinic. She is deferring her scholarship for one year.

Fourth on the NCAA Division III all-time list for career three-pointers with 243, Jackson holds at least 42 school or conference basketball records, including most career points and assists in the University Athletic Association (UAA). She was named to the all-UAA teams every year of her college career.

Jackson's lengthy list of activities includes serving as a resident adviser at Emory and deaconess in her church, as well as volunteering at food banks and shelters. She was voted the 1994 grand female winner of the "Peach of an Athlete" award, presented to a college athlete who serves as an outstanding role model. She also was named 1995 Sportswoman of the Year by the Georgia Women's Intersport Network, and 1994 "Female Amateur Athlete of the Year" by Atlanta Sports and Fitness magazine. Jackson was one of three finalists for the Marion Luther Brittain Service Award, presented at commencement in gratitude for service performed without expectation of reward or recognition.
