Emory's Habitat house standing tall

The walls are up and the roof is on the Habitat for Humanity House that members of the Emory community are building for Sabrina White and her family. White's house is being built as the University's service project to commemorate the April inauguration of President Bill Chace and is one of six being built on Henry Aaron Drive. Since Feb. 4, 185 members from every school and division of the Emory community have worked on the house, including roofers (right) Bobbi Patterson, associate university chaplain, and (below) Emory College students Gabe Owens and Scott Nelson.

"This project has brought Emory people together and it's allowed departments to see and meet people they would never have met otherwise," said Rod Gary, construction planner in Facilities Management and Emory's Habitat volunteer coordinator. Gary, who has worked on the house for the past six Saturdays, said people are still calling him to sign up to work and he's had to turn away more than 100 volunteers. "The willingness to work is here," said Gary. "We're looking into the possibility of teaming up with Morehouse College next year to build another house."

The house will be dedicated on Saturday, April 1, at 11 a.m. Vans will leave from Cox Hall at 10:30 a.m. and will return to campus following a brief ceremony and light lunch at 12:30 p.m.
