Nursing students provide health screenings at Fernbank

Candace Shell, a second grader at Fernbank Elementary School, has her blood pressure checked by graduate nursing student Linda Hetherbee during "It's Cool to Grow." The Feb. 24 event, a collaboration of the School of Nursing's Pediatric Advanced Nursing Practice (PANP) program and Fernbank Elementary, brought undergraduate and graduate nursing students and faculty to the school to do health screenings on 647 children. Information on height, weight, blood pressure, foot size, safety habits and nutritional patterns was gathered; annual follow-ups will be done, with particular focus on those under or overweight and those with above-average blood pressure. Professor Marcene Powell, who directed the project, and Janie Maisonneuve, project coordinator, worked with Fernbank principal Ruth Manning to coordinate the event. Powell said the project "reflected PANP's priority of health screening and of promoting health and wellness in infants, children and families." Fernbank Elementary is one of Emory's partner schools.
