Native American Month events encompass the artistic and political

Native American Month will include a variety of offerings from the artistic to the political. Warren Genett, chairperson of the Native American Center of Georgia, will introduce two major events during the month.

According to Cultural Programs Coordinator Maria Lozano of the Multicultural Programs and Services office, "This year's third annual Native American Month has been designed to continue raising awareness of Native Americans and their ongoing cultural impact in Georgia. To this end, Emory's Native American Month Committee has planned more panel discussions than ever before. Other new offerings include an unprecedented exhibit of the Michael C. Carlos Museum Native American Collection."

A complete listing of Native American Month events can be found on the Emory Report calendar. Highlights of the month's events include:

* March 27 "Termination and Restoration: The Future of Native American Tribes," a panel discussion at 8 p.m. in Cox Hall Banquet Room #3.

* April 2 "Pueblos to Moundbuilders: The Native American Collection of the Michael C. Carlos Museum," a lecture-slide presentation by Carlos curator Lori Iliff at 2 p.m. in the Reception Hall of the museum.

* April 3 Native American Cultural Program from 7 to 9 p.m. will include photographer Tracey Schmidt presenting "The Awakening of Turtle Island: Photographing the Unknown America."

* April 4 "Disturb-ing the Peace of the Dead: A Look at the Desecration of Native American Burial Sites in Georgia" at 7 p.m. in 311 Bishops Hall.

* April 21 - Screening of "Warrior Chiefs in a New Age" at 6 p.m. in 206 White Hall. Dean Curtis Bearclaw (Crow) and Patricia Hilden (Nez Perce) will explore "When Nickels Were Indians."
