Women's basketball advances to nationals

Emory enjoyed its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III national women's basketball championship, advancing to the "Sweet 16" round before being eliminated by Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Emory hosted first- and second-round tournament games, defeating Millsaps (Miss.), 95-77 on March 1, and knocking off Marymount (Va.), 95-79 on March 4. The Eagles finished with a school-record 21 wins, their first No. 1 NCAA regional ranking, top-15 national rankings from three basketball publications, and their highest finish ever, second place, in the University Athletic Association (UAA). Five of the UAA schools were selected for the NCAA tournament, a figure unsurpassed by any other NCAA Division III conference. Coach Myra Sims bids farewell to three graduating seniors--Ashley Gordon of Stone Mountain, Mandy Jackson of Madison, Wis., and Nytasha Thoms of West Mifflin, Pa.-- who were responsible for elevating the program from an 11-15 record in 1990-91 to subsequent season records of 13-13, 14-10, 17-8 and 21-6. Gordon was named "Player of the Year" in the UAA, while Jackson was voted to the all-UAA second team, and Thoms received honorable mention. -- John Arenberg
