Studies in progress

AT RISK FOR GLAUCOMA STUDY

Persons 40-80 years of age who have either ocular hypertension -- a higher than normal pressure within the eye -- or are at risk for developing glaucoma as determined by their eye doctor, may be eligible to participate in the Emory component of a national eye study. Qualified participants are those who have never undergone glaucoma surgery and have at least two of the following risk factors: a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure, nearsightedness or are African American. Study medications will be provided free of charge. For information, call Donna Leef at the Eye Center at 778-4134.

DIABETES STUDY

Researchers are seeking volunteers for a one-year study of a new oral drug for adult-onset diabetes. The study will evaluate the effectiveness of the new drug in lowering blood sugar -- and the safety of the drug alone or in combination with conventional antidiabetic drugs. The study is targeted toward persons with diabetes whose condition is uncontrolled on diabetic pills, but who are not yet on insulin. Qualified participants will receive free physicals, laboratory work and study medication. For information, call 728-4918.

MACULAR DEGENERATION STUDY

Researchers at the Eye Center are looking for people ages 55-78 with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) to participate in a National Institutes of Health study. Eligible participants must have good vision in at least one eye and eye examination findings consistent with AMD. Specific patients now being sought include those who have been told they either have macular degeneration or a condition called drusen. There will be no charges associated with the study or the nutritional supplements. Call 248-4261.

MEMORY PROBLEMS STUDIES

Persons with memory problems are needed for studies at the School of Medicine. The research will assess the effectiveness of medications in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Qualified participants need to meet criteria for probable Alzheimer's disease. Symptoms include disorientation; loss of judgment and problem-solving abilities; and decreased functioning in home, hobbies, community affairs and personal care. Participants should otherwise be in good health. Study medications and examinations by Emory physicians based at Wesley Woods Health Center are provided free of charge. Call 728-6311.
