Seminar to deal with issues of aging parents and their families

Helping an aging parent plan a financially and emotionally stable future can be a daunting task for the unprepared. To assist employees, alumni and friends who are in the midst of caring for older family members or who are contemplating that in the near future, the Association of Emory Alumni, Evening at Emory, the nursing school and the Office of Gift Planning are sponsoring a one-day seminar on Wednesday, June 7.

Seminar leaders include Ira Leff, an attorney specializing in Elder Law; Nancy L. Kriseman, a social worker and consultant to families working with older people; Tom Sherrill, a financial planner and experienced counselor in finances for the elderly; and Woody Spackman, director of pastoral services at Wesley Woods Geriatric Center. Each speaker will present case studies that will cover the issues in his or her area and will take questions from the audience. The seminar will explore the following questions about caring for aging parents:

* What issues does aging raise for elders and their families?

* What legal decisions should be made by your parents to assure that their affairs are in order? What should you know about powers of attorney, living wills, wills, trusts, Medicare and Medicaid?

* What kind of care do your parents need now? Where can you find that care? What questions should you ask to assure quality care? Where can you go for care in the future, when your parents need close attention?

* What can be done with the property your parents own -- real estate, stocks, IRAs, pensions -- to make sure they get the best income possible from them? How do you help your parents make reasonable investment decisions?

* How can you deal with the emotional strain of acting as a guardian to your parents? How do you deal with guilt and grief? How can you take care of yourself emotionally, as well as your parent, during these difficult times?

The seminar, to be held in Cox Hall, will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration on the third floor of Cox Hall, and will end at 3 p.m. The cost of the event, including materials and lunch, is $20 for an individual and $30 for a couple. Registration is limited; for more information, contact Mindy Hyman in Institutional Advancement at 727-8875.
