Emory to encourage `clean' commuting

Getting solo drivers to find alternative, more environmentally friendly ways of getting to and from work has been one of the goals of the annual Clean Commute Week.

For the second year in a row, Emory Parking and Community Services (EPCS) will support that goal with a slate of special campus activities during Clean Commute Week May 15-19.

Emory activities planned for Clean Commute Week include:

*One free MARTA pass good for unlimited rides on Clean Commute Day Thursday, May 18, to the first 100 University, Emory Hospital and Emory Clinic employees who come to the EPCS office at 1701 Lowergate Drive. Passes will be available at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, May 15. Employees must show an Emory ID and agree to sign a pledge roster. Those already participating in the Emory-subsidized MARTA transcard program do not qualify.

*Recognition of active car poolers and special reserved parking in the decks for trial car pools on May 18. Campus shuttles will host ridership appreciation events during the week.

*Free use of P.E. Center locker room facilities for employees who bike to work on Tuesday, May 16, Bike to Work Day. Bikers must show an Emory ID and their bike helmets for admission. The P.E. Center opens at 6:30 a.m.

*Free coffee and juice at the EPCS office for employees who walk or ride motorcycles to work any morning during Clean Commute Week.

"We are trying to recognize the most commonly used alternate transportation commute methods of Emory employees during Clean Commute Week," said Cheryle Crumley, EPCS alternative transportation manager. "Hundreds of University, Emory Hospital and Emory Clinic employees already come to work not using the single-occupancy vehicle. We want to show our appreciation to those employees and encourage others to give it a try."

Clean Commute Day is organized by the American Lung Association with the support and assistance of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. This is the sixth annual Clean Commute Day for the 20-county metro area.
