Maggie Stephens honored for `I am Emory' attitude

Maggie Stephens, administrative assistant of the sociology department, has been named the Emory College Employee of the Year. Stephens, former president of Employee Council, a key member of the College Staff Consortium for more than 15 years, and Staff Day committee member for 10 years, has worked in the sociology department since 1971. Rick Rubinson, chair of the department, described her as "the consummate Emory staff employee."

Rubinson, who accepted the award in Stephens' behalf at the May 5 meeting of the College Staff Consortium, quipped that, "Maggie spends most of her day doing my job; it's only appropriate that I spend a few minutes today doing hers." Stephens was away due to a death in her family.

Stephens served on the original by-laws committee of the College Staff Consortium, two terms as the Social Science representative and as a member of numerous committees. She currently is actively involved in redesigning staff evaluation forms. According to Lynn Schechtel, chair of the award committee, the recipient is "selected on the basis of job performance, interpersonal skills and exemplification of the `I am Emory' philosophy."

Dean David Bright, in his comments at the meeting, said, "Faculty come and go. The staff of the College provide the glue over time to make the college function."
