Faculty Town Hall Meeting scheduled for Nov. 20

Editor's note: The following is an open invitation to faculty from President Bill Chace.

I write to invite you to the next Faculty Town Hall Meeting, to be held in the Cox Hall Banquet Room from 4:30-6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 20. Your presence at these meetings is, in my view, absolutely vital to the sound governance of the University, and I very much encourage your participation.

On the two-part agenda for our discussion will be, first, the state of teaching at Emory University. What are the conditions that affect--for good or ill--the quality of our teaching? What can we learn from each other, and from other institutions, about how to evaluate and improve our teaching? How good is our teaching, and how good is the institution in recognizing and rewarding good teaching? How might we more fully integrate our teaching with the full range of student life here at Emory? More particularly, as [Provost] Billy Frye and I contemplate the appointment of a task force on the improvement of teaching, what should be the charge of this group of faculty members, and how should the task force itself be constituted?

The second half of the meeting will be given over to questions on any matter that you choose to raise. Provost Frye and University Senate President Richard Letz will join me in facilitating this conversation.

I look forward to talking with you on Nov. 20.

Bill Chace
President
