Parking forms are on the way

Faculty and staff registration forms for 1996 campus parking are being prepared and should be sent through interoffice mail by next week.

Erick Gaither, director of the Department of Community Services, said that while the expense of deck construction has driven up parking rates for next year, parking fees at Emory remain lower than other large universities in Atlanta and at many comparable universities across the nation.

Emory parking rates for 1996, which take effect Jan. 31, will be $126 per year for Zone 1 hang tags (faculty, principal staff and physicians), and $66 per year for Zone 2 hang tags (general University staff) and Zone 4 hang tags (Emory Hospital and Emory Clinic staff). Deck card rates are $108 per year for faculty, principals and University and hospital staff; $165 per year for physicians; and $330 per year for clinic staff.

Fees for 1995 were $60 for faculty, $30 for staff and $108 for deck cards. For employees who choose to pay parking fees through payroll deduction, the monthly fees for a hang tag and deck card are: $19.50 for faculty and principals; and $14.50 for University staff.

At Georgia State University, 1995 rates were $319.92 ($26.66 per month) for both faculty and staff. Georgia Tech charged $180 per year for faculty and staff parking in 1995.

Parking rates for 1995 at some of Emory's peer institutions include:

*Washington University in St. Louis: $430 per year for gated parking and $250 per year for open parking for faculty and staff;

*Tulane University (New Orleans): $325 per year for faculty and alumni; $275 per year for staff earning $15,000 and above; $175 per year for staff earning less than $15,000;

*Duke University (Raleigh/Durham, N.C.): $300 per year for faculty (premium gated parking); $150 per year for staff and graduate students (gated parking);

*Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh): Fees are based on proximity to buildings, and all lots are open to faculty, staff and students. Closest lots range from $881-$900 per year. Other lots range from $364-$430 per year;

*Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore): $264 per year ($22 per month) for faculty; $132 per year ($11 per month) for staff.

Bill Collier, assistant director of Community Services for parking, said, "Although Emory parking fees are lower than most comparable institutions, we still do not like increases in rates. Unfortunately, all of us who park on campus must share in the cost of building more parking spaces. This year, we opened two new decks with 1,763 spaces at a cost of approximately $16 million."

Parking registration forms must be returned to the Department of Community Services, 1701 Lowergate Drive, by Jan. 31, 1996. For further information, call 727-6106.
