Smoking prohibited in private offices

As you know, Emory policy prohibits smoking in University offices and classroom buildings. Please note that the smoking restriction includes private offices.

We have received complaints about some individuals who, despite this policy, persist in smoking in University buildings. Thus, I must remind you of the policy, and tell you that it is in compliance with the DeKalb County Code, which the University must and will enforce. Violators of the code may be subject to criminal citation and prosecution. Conviction of an offense under the code is subject to punishment by a fine up to $l,000, imprisonment in the county jail for up to 30 days, or forced labor on the county work gang for up to 60 days.

I regret the need to call your attention to this policy in such a forceful way, and I am sure that with a little reflection offenders will wish to comply out of consideration for their colleagues, students and others with whom they are associated in their daily work. Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

B. E. Frye, Provost
