Author to discuss gay liberation movement

Urvashi Vaid, former executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, will read from her new book, Virtual Equality: The Mainstreaming of Gay and Lesbian Liberation, on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m. in Room 4, Cox Hall.

Sponsored by the Office of Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Life, Charis Books and More, and Outwrite Books, the event is being held in celebration of National Coming Out Day. Vaid's address is free and open to the public, and a reception and booksigning will follow. For information, call 727-0272.

Award nominations sought

The School of Public Health's Martin Luther King Committee is soliciting nominations of community-based organizations committed to violence prevention among youth. Five presentations will be made during an awards ceremony sponsored by the School of Public Health during Emory's celebration of King Week the week of Jan. 15. To receive a nomination form, call Tracy Woods at 727-8393. Nominations must be postmarked by Nov. 1.

Conference addresses women's business issues

The business school will co-sponsor a forum titled "The Challenge of Growth: Businesswomen Who Dare to Think Big" on Friday, Oct. 13, from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. on campus.

The forum will focus on women's business issues and will feature many of the nation's top female business executives who have built multi-million dollar businesses. The conference will include presentations, panel discussions and informal networking sessions for participants.

The keynote address will be given by Sherry Manning, president of the Education Communications Consortia. A special luncheon address will be given by Carolee Friedlander, president of Carolee Designs, a multi-million dollar fashion jewelry company. The conference will also include other speakers from the business school as well as the Committee of 200 and the Committee of 200 Foundation, which are co-sponsors of the event. The Committee of 200 is a 380-member professional organization of businesswomen from 70 industries who "personify the spirit of entrepreneurship and business leadership."

Conflict of interest policy revised

As of Oct. 1, the University's Sponsored Research and Technology Transfer (Conflict of Interest) Policy has been revised to comply with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' and the National Science Foundation's implementing regulations on conflict of interest.

Faculty members who have not received a copy of the revised policy should contact Ann Stevens at 727-2503. In addition, all faculty engaged in sponsored research (or who are eligible to be engaged in sponsored research) are required to submit to their dean an annual financial disclosure statement. The forms for the disclosure statement are appended to the conflict of interest policy.
