Yerkes shuttle route being tested in pilot project
If a one-month pilot program demonstrates a significant demand for it, a campus shuttle route to Yerkes Primate Research Center could become a permanent part of the shuttle system.

The Department of Community Services began a one-month pilot project Sept. 1 to determine the demand for a Yerkes shuttle route. The test route has been added to the existing Emory Hospital patient/visitor shuttle route #2. The shuttle stops include: Emory Hospital, Lowergate parking deck, the South Clinic, Uppergate Pavilion, Egleston Children's Hospital, Center for Rehabilitation Medicine, Yerkes Primate Center and the Cystic Fibrosis Center.

The shuttle route will serve Yerkes Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and will run every 20 minutes. A MARTA bus route connects with the Yerkes route, inbound at Woodruff Residential Center and outbound at the Cystic Fibrosis Center.

Cheryle Crumley, assistant director of Community Services/Transportation, is asking all employees and students to let her know how the Yerkes shuttle service affects them. Crumley can be reached by phone at 727-7638 or by fax at 727-2673.

Carter Center appoints new education program coordinator

Conference to address end-of-life issues
The School of Medicine, the Quality of Life Program and the Center for Ethics in Public Policy and the Professions will present "Last Rights: Decision Making at the End of Life" on Sept. 22 and 23 in WHSCAB.

The program is designed for physicians and other health care professionals in specialties where end-of-life decisions are made, as well as for medical and other graduate and professional students.

Participants will examine the role of moral reasoning and moral imagination in end-of-life decisions. In addition, they will be provided with current information on and actively discuss the medical, ethical and legal status of concepts such as physician-assisted dying, determination of medical futility and the use of advanced directives. Topics will include: decision making capacity, the impact of managed care, neonatal end-of-life care, dealing with conflicting value systems under do-not-resuscitate orders, futility and issues in chronic illness. Participants also will consider whether the role of the student presents special ethical concerns in the care of the dying.
