Emory College student dies in Savannah

Emory College senior John Kelsey drowned on March 16 in Savannah, where he was visiting for St. Patrick's Day. According to witnesses, someone matching Kelsey's description put down a backpack and lost his footing and dropped 12 to 15 feet into the Savannah River. The backpack contained Kelsey's driver's license and other identification. Divers immediately tried to rescue him, but were unable to find him. Diving efforts were hampered by bad weather. The body was discovered on March 26.

Kelsey's mother, Janet Kelsey, is a senior secretary at Yerkes Primate Research Center and a member of Employee Council.

A memorial service for Kelsey was held on March 30.
