President's Commission Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns

Co-chair Bill Thompson called the May meeting to order on May 18 at 4 p.m. in the Administration Building. After approval of minutes, he called for committee reports.

Alex Morgan of the long range planning committee said a letter is ready to be sent to Frances Lucas-Tauchar, dean of Campus Life, requesting the word "transgendered" be added to the commission's title. According to Bob Ethridge, director of the Equal Opportunities Office, such a change would not affect Emory's EOP policies, however some debate arose over benefits extended to domestic partners of transgendered individuals. Morgan, Saralyn Chesnut, DyShaun Muhammed and Tamara Alexander volunteered to usher the name change through over the summer.

Jack Zupko reported the nominations committee is preparing to submit two nominess for honorary degrees, and Morgan said the web page committee has added several links to the commission's site.

Thompson said that in a meeting with Ron Taylor, associate vice president for Campus Life, Taylor said Aramark catering service has been "very cooperative" in an effort to determine EOP policies of its subcontractors. Standing in for treasurer Danielle Doughman, Chesnut reported that $1,350 remained in the commission's 1997-98 budget after payment of expenses.

Chesnut suggested putting more effort into the Safe Space Program at Oxford. She requested $1,000 for the redesign and reprinting of the Safe Space logo and related materials, including publicity posters. The request was unanimously approved.

The commission then approved the remaining $350 for a half-day retreat for commission members prior to the beginning of fall semester. With the target date of a Saturday morning in August, Thompson and Morgan volunteered to inform commission members of the exact time and place after it has been decided.

Alexander volunteered and was approved to serve as secretary for the commission next year. Thompson announced the next meeting will be Aug. 24 in 400 Administration Building.
